This Week in Dexter Class

This week, we will be using the story 'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy as the driver for our learning. Our work on owls last week will tie in well with this story, as the children seemed to really enjoy the theme and were interested to find out more.

In phonics, we will be learning the sounds sh, th, ch and ng, and will be reading the tricky words are, you, she and they. These sounds are called digraphs, as they have two letters making one sound. Children often find them difficult to pronounce properly, so when reading at home, please encourage them to be careful to make the correct sound.

In maths, we will be looking at shape and will focus on rectangles, including squares. You may well find yourself spotting different rectangles around the house and your local area! We will be encouraging children to explain how they know that they have found a rectangle by describing the properties. They will also look at other 2d shapes and explain how they know that they are not rectangles.

In RE, we will be asking the question, "Why do Christians perform nativity plays at Christmas?" We will begin by making links to other religious celebrations and festivals that we have learned about, including Diwali, Raksha Bandhan, baptisms and Sukkot, and noting the similar ways in which people celebrate special times together, before moving on to think about the key figures in the nativity story.

We are hoping to welly walk on Tuesday this week, and take advantage of all the beautiful colours of autumn.
