Town planning and construction
Last week we received a letter from some elves, who had had the unfortunate luck to have had their town blown down by the strong winds. They asked us if we might be able to help them plan and rebuild their town. The children came up with lots of good ideas about what would be needed in a town and listed many key public buildings (There was even a hospital, which we presume to be run by the National Elf Service!) They then set about using the 3d shapes to build. Whilst this was happening, there were lots of discussions about what the shapes were called and how many faces they had etc. When they had finished, the children took a tour of the town and explained their construction to each other. We took photos and then labelled them with names of the 3d shapes we had learned.
Later in the week, the poor elves had yet another disaster when their Christmas sweet supplies were stolen by a creature that was bigger than them. This instigated a discussion about which creature it might have been and the children compared the length of different toy animals to find the culprits!
