At Amberley Primary we believe that high quality teaching in English is integral to children's learning across the curriculum. The basic skills of reading and writing open the doors to all other areas. English is taught daily as a discreet subject throughout the school and is also taught in a cross curricular context, raising the standards of reading and writing in other subject areas.

We use the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme throughout the Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2 as well as introducing the children to the Dewey decimal system in our library, where the children are free borrow books that interest them.

We are also privileged to have a Gloucestershire County Education English lead on our team.

At Amberley Parochial Primary School we follow the LCP (3rd Edition) Letters and Sounds plan using resources from the RWI scheme.  We also use the ‘Fred Frog’ system of teaching letter sounds (pure sounds) using the mnemonic associated with each sound.  Each lesson comprises of 5 parts; Revisit & review, Teach, Practise, Apply, Assess.  Lessons are taught daily for 30 minutes, in appropriate phase groups of approximately 8-10 children, at the beginning of each day.

Phonics is assessed according to the assessment timetable. Children identified as being at risk of not passing the Year 1 Phonics Screening Test have additional support during the spring terms.

At Amberley Parochial, we believe that children should learn to take pride in their work and as such, handwriting and presentation skills need to be taught carefully.

In Reception, children are taught a non cursive script. This is then developed, when the children are ready, into a continuous cursive style. The link below demonstrates how joins are formed. (Please ensure you have selected the continuous cursive options).

At Amberley we take PE seriously and  as such employ specialist PE teachers who not only take PE lessons themselves, but also teach alongside school staff to ensure continued professional development.

In an increasingly technological society, it is important that our children are well equipped to tackle the constantly changing world of computing. Computing is taught across the school and we are fortunate to have the support of well qualified governors as well as a technical team of students on top of the ICT support service that we use to ensure our equipment (and staff!) is up to date. E-safety is a high priority and children are taught how to keep themselves safe online.
