Road Safety Week

Throughout the week this week, we have been looking at the theme of road safety. The children have discussed lots of good ideas about how to keep themselves and others safe when around the roads or in a car. We have completed a traffic survey, where the children decided which vehicles were likely to come past the playground before drawing them (after discussion, we decided against jets and monster trucks!). We then counted each vehicle type as they passed us and recorded them. Some children chose to use a tally like system of lines or ticks, whilst others wrote numbers. When we were finished, we looked at our results and the children explained which vehicle had been most popular, making sens

MovieStarPlanet

MovieStarPlanet is an online game with a social networking aspect, which is popular with 8-13 year olds. The game allows children to customise a movie star character and explore a virtual world with a movie star theme. Children are able to make animated films, design artbooks and play online games. The social networking aspect of the game allows users to use chat rooms to make contact with other users. There are a range of safety features and advice available. All Creatures Great and Small

This week, among a host of other activities, we have been bug hunting and learned about how different creatures need shelter and protection; created a vets' surgery, booked in, cared for and created medical records for our 'pets', and had an exciting visit from snakes, geckos, frogs (which were VERY jumpy!) bearded dragons and a tarantula, among others! As you can imagine, it has been rather an exciting week!

Patterns

In Maths this week, as well as our ongoing number work, we have be looking at repeating patterns and attempting to make our own using all sorts of different media, including sticks, stones, paintbrushes, water cans, shapes and much more. We have looked at repeating patterns in movement and in music, where we created rhythms with the instruments. According to Nrich, recent research has found that young children’s ability to spot mathematical patterns can predict later mathematical achievement, more than other abilities such as counting (Rittle-Johnson et al, 2016). StartFragmentPatterns are also an important element of spatial thinking and geometry, for instance with reflective and rotati
